Ups & Downs of Building a Tea Company

November 21, 2011

Our Home Tea L.L.C. started with a thought.  While sitting in the Dushanbe tea house in Boulder, Colorado enjoying the company and conversation of friends and family and enjoying the delicious tastes of wonderful loose leaf teas from all over the world it occurred to me that most people when talking of “tea” discuss what I have come to term “bag-in-a-box” tea. The tea bags – if you open one up, and please do so – are filled with tiny little “bits” of tea leaves. These bags of “tea” often produce a drink that leans to the bitter side and much of the time leaves a film on your teeth.  Why would anyone become a tea drinker?

I decided that I would develop an organization that would provide people with the opportunity to try or “re-try” tea. I also decided we would focus on bringing together friends and family to share in the exploration of wonderful teas from China, India, Japan and other tea producing countries, of which there are many. Steeping loose leaf tea is the purest way to enjoy tea. These could also be called – and sometimes are – whole leaf tea where the teas are picked, lightly processed, packed and shipped often right near the fields where they are harvested. Black tea, Green tea, Oolong tea, Herbal tea – tisanes – are all here to explore… To be continued.
